A. Browsing and mailing

1. Firefox represents a good alternative to the less-secure Internet Explorer. It's faster and safer.

2. FileZilla is one of the fastest and most reliable FTP client (and server) with lots of useful features and an intuitive interface.

3. Thunderbird is simple to use and fast. Thunderbird supports IMAP and POP mail protocols. You can easily import any of your existing email accounts and messages. Supports advanced search methods in the mail folders.

4. PuTTy is a free and very stable implementation of mainly Telnet and SSH for Win32 and Unix platforms. PuTTY can store hosts addresses and preferences for later use and it can also work over the SSH encryption key and protocol version.

5. Gaim is an multi-protocol Instant Messaging client for Yahoo, MSN, AOL and IRC. A great alternative for the classic programs.

6. UltraVNC is an easy to use REMOTE ADMINISTRATOR that works over the network or over the Internet. With UltraVNC you can work on a remote computer, as if you were sitting in front of it, right from your current location.

B. Office tools

7.OpenOffice is an open source project that includes all the office tools needed. It's usage and features are very closed to Microsoft Office. No compatibility issues between them. It includes: WriterCalcImpressDrawBaseMath

8. The Gimp is the GNU Image Manipulation Program that offers many effects and retouching tricks for photos. It works on many operating systems and in many languages. GIMP is probably the best Opensource image manipulation program available.

9. GnuCash is a personal and small business finance application. Easy to use, GnuCash allows you to monitor all your financial aspects, like incomes and spendings. It features :

  • Customers, Vendors, Jobs, Invoices

10. PDFCreator enables you to easly create PDF files. One can use it like a printer in Word, OpenOffice or any other application.

13. IMGV is an image viewer that includes rotating, zoom, slide shows and image browsing. Imgv is portable and can run on Windows, Linux, BSD, OSX, or any other operating systems.

14. Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.

D. Sharing

15. uTorrent is a BitTorrent client. Enables you to download large files very fast by cutting them in small segments and connecting to many users.

16. EMule is one of the most reliable peer-to-peer file sharing clients.

E. Network

17. Ethereal is used by network administrators for troubleshooting, analysis, software and protocol development, and education. It's protocol analyzer has unique functions.

18. FreeMeter is a simple, friendly network monitoring and diagnosis tool. It displays information on your traffic, checks for new e-mails and ping the computers in the network.
