Setting up your wireless network on LinkSys |

In this tutorial, I will explain how to build your wireless network using a LinkSys router in very easy steps.
Wireless networks became more popular these days since mobility is a key aspect in any environment, even for home users. This tutorial will show you how simple it is to setup a small wireless network to share your Internet connection for fixed and mobile users.
Get the IP address from the "default gateway" since that is the router's LAN address. Of course, you can get this address from the user's manual supplied with the router too.
After logging, you will see the router's menu. This indeed depends on the vendor and/or model, but the topics are quite the same for all. The first screen brings up the basic router configuration, like WAN and LAN IP addresses. The "Internet Setup" part should be configured using your Internet Service Provider addresses (DHCP/Static IP or PPPoE if you use some kind of authentication for your Internet access). The Domain Name and Hostname are optional.
The Network Setup reffers to your Local Area Network. I recommend you to leave the DHCP Server as enabled to allocate IP addresses automatically in your network; this is appliable to both wired and wireless interfaces. If you don't have any special needs, you can leave all fields here to the default ones, since it works perfectly for a network up to 50 clients. The MAC Address Clone tab activates a function that will duplicate one of your PC's MAC addresses on the Internet interface. This is useful only when the Internet Service Provider restricts the usage of the connection to the physical address of only one PC for security reasons.
If enabled, by clikcing "Clone My PC's MAC", the MAC address of the interface that connects to the Internet will be identical to the one of your PC; the Internet Service Provider won't know that you are sharing your internet connection and their equipments will think that they are still connected to your PC without any router. If this is the case, be sure that you are not violating any agreements between you and the company the provides you Internet services since that could lead to extra fees or worse.
Next fill in the SSID of the network; this is the name of the wireless network itself and should be set to something that describe your network (like Private-home for example). The wireless channel is not important, since any radio interface will scan all channels to find a wireless device to connect to; just be sure not to interfere with any other wireless router or access point, having the same settings and the same channel.
Save your setting and your ready to go. After connecting your clients, you can also use the "Wireless MAC Filter" tool for better security. This feature will learn the MAC addresses of the clients you select and allow traffic from those wireless interfaces only after enabling it. After you do all this, it's time to backup your configuration. FOr this, go to the Administration tab and click Backup Settings. A config file will be generated and you can download it to your PC and restore it if something goes wrong in the future.
For better security, change the router's administrator password too, from admin to something more complex to prevent unauthorized access. Enjoy your brand new wireless network!

Hello, This tutorial is very helpful, thanks! I have a question though: is there a way to see how many users are sharing the wireless signal through the router's interface? (e.g. by listing the MAC addresses of the users, etc) Thanks, Arzu
written by Mihai Dobos , January 23, 2008
Hello Well it depends on the model and on the firmware of the router; the easiest choice is to to see the DHCP client list or in wireless, connected clients on the MAC filter tab.

Thanks. I haven't tried it yet but I'm sure it works. Please, is it the pass phrase that you enter in the Security segment that new clients will have to enter when they log on for the first time?
written by Mihai Dobos , January 25, 2008
Hello George The pass phrase is a private key that will encrypt your wirelss data so it cannot be read by a third party. It also authenticates the client to the wireless router. It must be entered only the first time on the client most of the times (MS Windows auto-saves it for example). Some versions of Linux don't save it, so you'll have to enter it every time. But for Windows XP/2003/Vista the network setting are saved (pass key included) so don't worry about setting it up. Enter it once, then it's plug and play. However, if you want to create a hotspot for your clients, it's best to isolate the router to have access only to the Internet and NOT to the local area network, and use open sessions (no encryption and no keys at all).

I gave a passphrase and it gave me a randomly (I think) generated key. I'd rather set my own access password, is this possible?

I made the changes requested above to the wireless security setting changing it to WPA2 and entering a passphrase. my second computer is still connecting to the internet without a password which is telling me that anyone still can. Shouldnt I need to enter the passphrase from the second computer after setting the wireless security to get online? What am I missing?

Hello, I'm trying to help my parents set up a wireless network in their condo. Right now it's good to go but the problem is everytime they shut down the computer and turn it back on they have to re-enter the network key twice to connect to their wireless network. Do you know how I can set it up so it will automatically connect for them. I'm a college student and by no means the most tech savy so any advice you have would really be appericiated. Thanks!
written by tman , December 16, 2008
Liz, There should be a checkbox that you need to check in order for your laptop/computer to remember the key you set. If it's XP, it should save it by default, but if you are using Vista, you have to save the network and the key.

My granddaughter's Windows 98 PC wasn't working so I reformatted her hard drive. Her parents have a Linksys router. The Windows 98 PC has a Linksys network card but the setup CD appears to be scratched and won't work. Do I need to find another Linksys installation CD to set up her PC to get to the Internet?

Hi, i have 2 questions, 1) i have 1 mb DSL conncetion at home and a wired router installed by my ISP then i bought a linksys wireless router in order to build the wireless network at home, its lan to lan configuration meaning my linksys router connected to my isp via a ethernet cable and its mode is as router instead of gateway, i had to turn off the dhcp of my linksys wifi router...the thing is that i must do portforwarding on my linksys router for p2p softwares to work but i cant access linksys router settings via browser since i have dhcp turned off and its static ip 192.168.2.1 not working which i set...how can i access linksys router settings? second question is that how can i enable file sharing at my home on wifi network?
written by TBert , February 09, 2009
Ray K, I had the same problem. It appears that the router's password needs to be reset. to do that, press the reset button on the back of the router for about 30 seconds. After doinf so you should be able to access the router by typing in admin in the password section (leaving user name blank).

Was working fine for quite some time, then stopped working for some reason so I had to set it up again. I can connect hard wired. With the router connected, I can ping and receive a response, it says I am connected, but the server is not found and will not browse internet. I've tried a variety of things with no success. Suggestions?

I have a Linksys wrt54gs v7. I have my computer, my daughter's desktop, and another daughter's laptop connected. Sometimes my husband hooks up his laptop to our wireless connection. Recently I had my daughter's laptop sharing my Hp Photosmart C7250 All-in-One Printer. It worked when we tested it out before we went on vacation. Then the other day we tried to get it to print to the computer and it started failures. Now we have errors. I first turned the radio back on, then I checked my linksys advisor, but the printer is showing light grey and doesn't seem to exist as far as my router is concerned. I have tried over and over again to add the printer back and can't seem to get it back on. When I try wireless set-up Wizard, it ask me for a Passphrase, but no matter which one of the WPA Passphrases that I put in, it doesn't seem to recognize even the latest. I pulled something off the other night which says the Passphrase is listed as one long string of numbers the other night, but that one doesn't work either. I'm begining to think I'd be better off starting from scratch again. I tried the 30 sec reset on the password thing you guys have been talking about. It would only reset it for the one page as soon as I selected a different tab, it required the password again and denied me access. Please help!!! I'm having a meltdown!!

I use cable internet on my Dell upstairs. I bought a Linksys WRT54GL router to hook up my new laptop. everything tells me that I can connected properly, but when I click on the network that I want to use it tells me that the security settings are not the same. i have gone into properties several times and checked all the info and it has not changed. Why do I keep having troubles getting on the internet? Before I started to get this message I couldn't go online then either and the laptop kept telling me that the server name was incorrect and that I had to call my IP (Comcast). Comcast tells me that there is no such thing. HELP! I have a brand new laptop I haven't been able to use for 1 month now.

To setup a wireless network as described, do I first need to setup a domain name name on each one of my laptops?

There is no run in the Start in Vista but a Search field - in here you type run and it brings up the command window in which you type pconfig /all Next to DHCP Server: you will see the IP address - mine is also 192.168.1.1 Then Type http:/192.168.1.1 or whatever your IP address is and it will take you to the Linksys site. In the wireless security there is no passphrase field but a WPA Shared Key: Once you save the changes I was thrown off the internet and had to configure my Linksys connection - right click properties and filled in the new WPA Shared Key: and voila it all worked great - so thanks a great help.
