photoshop-sharpen-logo.jpgIn this Photoshop tutorial you are going to learn how to increase a photos sharpening using a simple technique, making it more realistic.

Open your file. This is my original image:

As you can see it’s a little blurry and we want it to be more detailed.

Duplicate the original layer pressing Ctrl+J on your keyboard.

Select the new layer and apply a High Pass filter (Filters – Other – High Pass):

I’ve selected a value of 4 px.

Change the blending mode of this layer to Soft Light:

Select the original layer again and apply a Smart Sharpen filter (Filters – Sharpen – Smart Sharpen):

You may change the settings according to your picture.

If you’re not satisfied with the result you may apply the filter again by pressing Ctrl+F on your keyboard.

The final result:

awesome tutorial! i often have problems sharpening photos taken on my mobile phone. no technique will ever make them perfect, but this has to be the best thing i've tried to give those photos a bit of clarity.

Remember that following those steps to sharpen up your image, will also bring more noise to the image. By going to Filter - Noice - Reduce Noise and experimenting around you may be able to reduce some noise as well, and left you will have a less noised photo that is sharpend up into detail.

Keep experimenting, that's how you learn :) And by experimenting around, you may also find that an image with a touch of noise can look quite cool as well. So be sure to mess around with the settings! Good luck :)

Thomas is right, this technique will bring a little more noise to your photos. Fear not, it can hardly be noticed and the effects of the sharpness are way better.

Thanks Thomas for the Filter - Noise - Reduce Noise technique also.
