This tutorial shows you how to create a smoke appearing text effect for your flash banners. 1. Create a new flash document and save it as smokeTextEffect.fla. Go then to Modify >> Document (Ctrl+J) and set dimensions 300x200. 2. Rename your only layer bg. In the first frame import a 300x200 picture you desire for background. 3. Select the Text Tool (T) and choose Static text as Text Type, Verdana size 30 and any color you want (I choosed #3B1C58) then draw a text field onto the stage where you desire. 4. Write in the Text field Tutorial5 and when it is still selected choose Modify >> Break Apart (Ctrl+B) then right-click and click Distribute to Layers from the contextual menu.
5. Now you should move the bg layer to below the others layers (just click it and drag it down). 6. Now for each letter go back to frame 1, select the text and go to the Filters (next tab to Properties), click the plus button and select Blur. Set Blur X: 100, Blur Y:100
8. Great job! Repeat step 7 for the rest of the letters but for each letter add numberletter*10 to number of frames from example (where numberletter represents the place of the letter in tutorial5 word - for example o letter is the fourth). 9. Test the movie now and see your flash smoke appearing text effect :)! You need to Register in order to download the FLA file.

question, how do you keep the effect from constantly repeating? I'm new to Flash and have tried many tutorials, but none mentioned how to have the effect happen only once and then stop. I've tried adding another layer at the end with the stop(); action script command, but that made the entire movie static text. I appreciate any assistance.

So you add a new layer named actions on the top of the layer (good job). If you put any code in first frame delete it. Insert a blank keyframe in the frame 90. Now add the stop() code here in frame 90. That it's all. Hope it helps!

This is a great tutorial, but I am really not familiar with any kind of Flash animation, though I am very eager to learn this. Can you please let me know which Flash application this was created in (Flash MX etc) Any help would be appreciated and Thanks for sharing this. Jay

Also for the 8th step why don't you just say, Every 10 frames repeat what you have done on the 7th step ( The o layer would be the 40th frame and the r layer would be the 50th frame...)? Then people new to flash would understand it better or just people that don't understand it will understand it better.

I dont know what I did wrong? My letters will appear, but will disappear directly after one another? eg. T will show and disappear before the O will appear. Please help?
